Hearing Impaired Resource Base

Hyde Technology School is specifically resourced for pupils with a hearing impairment. A team of specialist staff work in the school to support pupils with a hearing loss. We work in an acoustically treated room within school so that pupils can be withdrawn from some lessons for specific work. However, most of the pupils spend the majority of their time in mainstream classes working alongside their hearing peers. Pupils receive different levels of support depending on their individual needs

What is the role of H.I.R.B. staff within school?

Our roles are many and varied. They include...

  • Daily acoustic testing and management of hearing and radio
  • Periodic electronic testing of audiological equipment
  • Individual tuition relating to language development, literacy and numeracy
  • Pre and post tutoring in curriculum subjects in order to teach and reinforce key vocabulary and concepts
  • In class support, depending on the needs of the individual pupil
  • Liaison with mainstream staff and other professionals, parents and carers whenever appropriate in order to ensure optimum access to the curriculum
  • Providing pastoral care and emotional support for hearing impaired pupils
  • Advising on the modification of curriculum materials
  • Delivering deaf awareness training and advice
