Training School
Hyde Technology School is an 11-16 mixed comprehensive with approx. 900 on roll. The school has been a designated specialist Technology College for 11 years and is currently in phase 4 of the TC programme. It is very well equipped with ICT and technology facilities – with 16 ICT suites located in subject departments – and at least one networked computer in each classroom – there are around 450 networked computers in the school – together with 36 interactive whiteboards.
The training of new teachers is seen as a high priority activity at the school with an Assistant Headteacher designated as the Professional Mentor. In September 2004 the school was designated as a “Training School” in recognition of the work undertaken in the field of teacher training and education. The school works in partnership with five HEIs to deliver and support high quality initial teacher training of PGCE trainees and graduate trainees.
The OfSTED report in 2002 commented that Hyde Technology School is “a good and improving school” with “many strong features and few weaknesses.” It highlighted that “GCSE results are good and represent a substantial achievement by the school and its pupils.” “Information and Communication Technology is a substantial strength of the school” and in addition the provision in English and Art is described as “very good”. “Bangladeshi pupils do particularly well – and better than pupils of the same heritage tend to do nationally.”
Approx 32% of students are eligible for free school meals – a high proportion compared to most secondary schools. Around 25% of students are of Bangladeshi origin. The intake at 11 years old has a low ability profile – drawing students from 7 main feeder primary schools. Many of these students achieve very low levels on the Key Stage 2 tests. The profile is skewed towards the lower end of the ability range compared to other schools in Tameside MB. However, value added measures indicate that Hyde Technology School is at the top of the table for the LEA (by a very wide margin) and in the top 5% of schools in England for CVA (KS2 to KS4).
The school has a National reputation for excellent practice in ICT – both as a subject at both Key Stages and through the integration of ICT into subjects. The school is involved in numerous collaborative projects to support the work of many other schools in delivering vocational ICT courses at Key Stage 4. The Director of ICT is OCR Chief Coordinator for the OCR Nationals in ICT and was previously Chief Examiner for GNVQ ICT (Foundation and Intermediate) until the qualification was withdrawn in 2008.
Hyde Technology School has partnerships with 5 different HEIs, including Manchester University, Edge Hill University and Manchester Metropolitan University. Support is given for initial teacher training, graduate teacher training, the training of overseas teachers, the University of Manchester Student Associates scheme; Teach First; Taster Days, and a wide range of both formal and informal activities in this field of work.
Upon entering Hyde Technology School it is evident to all that this is a “Training School”. The ethos is one where learning is our core purpose and is central to our values. Our focus on raising standards through the quality of teaching and learning drives the school improvement planning process, the curriculum structure and the professional development programmes.
All staff are reflective learners who take responsibility for their own professional development. Their experience is valued and they keep up to date with research and developments in both their subject and teaching methodology. They are at the leading edge of advancements in teaching and learning.
Our Training School is recognised as an enriching environment where high quality teaching and coaching are celebrated and best practice is shared within and beyond Tameside LEA. Our collaborative partnerships blend seamlessly to allow best practice to be shared and an effective continuum of lifelong learning to develop.
