Welcome to Maths at HTS

Head of Department: Mrs E Swindells

 

The mathematics department currently has seven full time members of staff and a Deputy Head that teaches part time.


All staff are specialist teachers who teach across the full age and ability range. We are an enthusiastic team with a very good work ethos and all staff are willing to give of their time to deliver extra revision lessons and to share resources.

 

The department is at the leading edge of ICT within mathematics and we are fortunate in having a dedicated ICT suite. A wide range of ICT is included in our teaching, each classroom has a data projector and either an interactive white board or a mimeo board. The software currently used includes MathsAlive, Easiteach, Geometer’s Sketch Pad, Omnigraph, Successmaker and Bounce Back. Kaleidos will be introduced in July 2004.

All classes are taught in sets. In KS3 year 7 are set on entry based on KS2 results. The Cognitive Acceleration in Mathematics Education project is also included in the year 7 and year 8 scheme of work. There are a wide variety of text books available, the most recent addition being the Impact series.

 

At KS4 we follow the Edexcel GCSE 1387 syllabus and use the Heinemann Edexcel text books.

 

PANDA data indicates that the departments ‘value added’ is consistently of an excellent standard and as a result we are currently a ‘Leading Maths Department’ for the authority. Consequently we have teachers from other schools within the North West visiting us to look at our use of ICT in mathematics.
