September-February Theme 1 – My World

March-July Theme 2 – Holiday,
Time & Travel
Topics: Travel, Transport & Finding the Way
Tourism, Accommodation, Holiday Activities,
Services (Banks, Hiring, Post Offices, Doctors etc.)
For French, German & Spanish year 9 pupils then opt to continue their
language-learning & in year 10 will start Themes 1 & 2 if they haven’t
followed the GCSE course in year 9 or will continue with the second year
of the GCSE as follows. Pupils wishing to opt for the hugely successful Bengali
GCSE course opt at the end of year 9 & begin the course in September
in year 10.
September-December Theme 3 – Work & Lifestyle
Topics: Home Life, Healthy Living, Part-time Jobs & Work Experience,
Leisure, Shopping
March-May Theme 4 – The Young Person
in Society
Topics: Character & Personal Relationships, the Environment, Education,
Careers & Future Plans, Social Issues, Choices & Responsibilities

Assessment
We follow the AQA Exam Board Specification ‘A’ GCSE (www.aqa.org.uk)
in French, German, Spanish & Bengali, with a proven record of success.
Many of our pupils continue their language-learning at A-Level & at University.
We assess listening, speaking, reading & writing skills throughout the
two-year course.
You have mock exams in December in each year of the course & final exams
in listening, speaking & reading in the summer of the 2nd year.

Written skills are assessed by coursework – three short essays are produced over the two years and marks go towards your final GCSE grade.
The languages department is able to teach French, German, Spanish, Bengali & Portuguese.
