Trips

We organise three European trips a year to make sure nobody misses out on the language experience of a lifetime!

At Christmas we offer a 4-day trip to Bruges (Belgium) & Aachen & Cologne in Germany. We visit the Christmas markets which take place in each of these beautiful cities. So don’t miss out on the delicious Christmas food & drink & the amazing decorations & street entertainment.

In the summer we offer two longer trips.

The first is our France/Belgium History trip where you will visit many of the historic sites significant in the first & second World Wars as well as more 21st century adventures such as spending a day at the Bellewaerde theme park in Belgium. Preview at www.bellewaerdepark.be

Our longest trip is a 9-day tour of Germany, Austria & France where we visit the beautiful town of Rüdesheim hidden in the picturesque vine-yards above the Rhine (click here for the powerpoint presentation created by two of our year 7 pupils).

From there we travel to Salzburg the city made famous by the Sound of Music & Mozart! We also stop off or stay overnight in the picturesque towns of Rothenburg & Rattenburg & all visitors to the magnificent Innsbruck have been hugely impressed by the Olympic ski & toboggan runs!

We also have the option of visiting the Alsace region of France on our way home & last year all were amazed at the fireworks & street parties in Strasbourg as the whole town celebrated Bastille Day.

Manchester Xmas MarketManchester’s Xmas Market

We also organize a day-trip to Boulogne & to Manchester’s European Christmas Market. In years 10 & 11 we go out to restaurants such as La Tasca & Café Rouge in Manchester. For younger pupils we combine our language skills with our fantastic culinary talents as pupils research authentic recipes and cook them for the whole class to try!

We work with other leading languages departments and enjoy showing off our talents at Longdendale’s Festival of Languages in July. Where groups perform plays and sketches in the foreign language or perform a cultural dance in front of other Tameside pupils.

At Standish Community Languages College we visit ‘the street’ where a walkway of shops & services has been created for pupils to practise their language during a virtual holiday experience of collecting their passport, booking a hotel, shopping & writing & sending postcards.

Our first Year 9 World of Work Day is set to take place in March where pupils will participate in business/technology/scientific & language related workshops hosted by North-West businesses.

As you can see the languages experience at HTS is ever changing & exciting & we are currently searching for e-pals to partner each year group from European schools so we can make full use of our video-conferencing equipment!

Our pupils enjoy the whole cultural & educational experience of learning a language and in year 7 we have our Linguist of the Year competition in July with a trophy for the winner producing the best speech about themselves in the language.
