What is a H.I.R.B.
Hyde Technology School is specifically resourced for children with a hearing impairment. This means that a team of specialist staff, centrally employed by Services for Children and Young People, work in the school to support children with a hearing loss. We work from an acoustically treated room within school so that students can be withdrawn from some lessons for specific work. However, the students spend the vast majority of their time in mainstream classes working alongside their hearing peers. Students receive different levels of support depending on their individual needs.

What is the H.I.R.B.’S role within school?
Our roles and many and varied. They include...
• Daily acoustic testing and management of hearing and radio aids.
• Periodic electronic testing of audiological equipment.
• Individual tuition relating to language development, basic literacy and basic numeracy.
• Pre and post tutoring in curriculum subjects in order to teach and reinforce key vocabulary and concepts.
• In class support, depending on the needs of the individual student (sign language support, notetaking, paraphrasing , rephrasing)
• Liaison with mainstream staff and other professionals, parents and carers whenever appropriate in order to ensure optimum access to the curriculum.
• Providing a safe haven and emotional support for hearing impaired students who are feeling vulnerable.
• Advice on modification of curriculum materials.
• Delivering deaf awareness training and advice when requested.
