Year 10

Most students study both English and Literature. During Year 10 we aim to complete as much coursework as possible for English to help ease the pressure during Year 11.

The coursework requirements are:

Oral:

Three pieces of oral work including individual, group and drama.

Written/Reading:

Original writing
Media
Response to prose
Shakespeare.

Our GCSE exam consists of two papers:

Paper 1:

Media
Writing to discuss, argue, persuade.

Paper 2:

Poetry from different cultures
Writing to describe, inform, explain.

It is vital that all coursework be completed on time as deadlines are there to ease pressure and allow time for independent study.

Year 11

During this year students work on exam technique and complete coursework for Literature. We have trailed a new system of entering students for their exam on November and this has proved to be extremely successful. If this is to continue then the exam will be in November and will require a great deal of revision between September and November.

Those students taking English Literature will have one further piece of coursework to complete. This will be a response to a modern play.

The Literature exam will be in May and will consist of one paper with two questions.

Example Questions:
- One on poetry comparing pre 1914 and post 1914.
- One on a modern novel.

All texts studied must contain no notes so it is vital that you know your texts.
