Investigating Business


Students are expected to investigate and report on 2 contrasting businesses. The vocational nature of the course encourages visits to the selected businesses and guest speakers. Students present their findings by way of a portfolio which is then assessed out of 100 marks and levels allocated grades A* - G. The syllabus followed is the Applied Business Studies by Edexcel

This unit is externally assessed with a written exam in January. There is the option of a June resit. This unit covers:

Methods of Payment

Break-even analysis

Profit & loss

Cash flow

Costs

Balance sheets

This unit is particularly useful for students with an interest in accountancy.

People and Business

Again this is a vocational unit which is assessed by way of portfolio evidence, topics covered are:

Stakeholders

Customer service

Consumer Protection

Rights and Responsibilities

Company policies

Only one business is investigated in this unit. In the past students have used The Village Hotel, Jarvis Piccadilly Hotel and Alton Towers.
