Head of Department: Mrs.
M.A Gadsby-Mace B.A Dip.A.D. Cert.Ed
Second in Department: Mr.R.Petrucci BA PGCE MA [Leeds]
Welcome to Art and Design
The Art and Design Department consists of two full-time, highly qualified
and enthusiastic teachers. Mrs. M.A Gadsby-Mace' specialist area
is Fine Art/Printmaking; Mr. R. Petrucci’s specialist area is
Sculpture/3D Design. Both teachers do, however, focus on all aspects
of the Art
and Design curriculum at KS3 and at KS4. Lower school class-work
and upper
school examination results celebrate the dedication and enjoyment
of both students and staff working closely together, as a successful
and
creative team.
Facilities consist of two multi-purpose art studios, each equipped with PC,
laser colour printer, scanner and digital- camera, TV and video recorder, as
well as all usual art studio materials/resources required to deliver a broad
and balanced Art and Design curriculum. ICT is used creatively in lesson planning
and delivery at all levels. Students have access to computer suites to research
or develop their artwork when necessary. Generous capitation allows students
to experience a wide range of creative techniques and processes. We are proud
of the fact that the department was recently described by OFSTED inspectors
as…………………”a strength of the
school.” Our students enjoy Art and Design and their creative work is
in evidence, on display, all around the building. This work is well-respected
by all. The school entrance foyer is a brilliant example of our “Art
into School” policy and the standard of student art- work on display
is commented upon by visitors and parents. We firmly believe that “Art’s
for All” and encourage students to express their individuality and flair.
We regularly train and mentor MMU student-teachers in the department and these
Art and Design trainees contribute greatly to further innovative ideas and
fresh approaches towards teaching the subject in the 21st century.
We have excellent links with local primary schools and host “taster sessions” within
the department during the summer term. We have completed a decorative installation
at Flowery Field Primary School which was produced by our Yr.8 art students
working alongside Yr.3 Primary students, and based upon Gustav Klimt’s
famous painting “The Tree of Life.” We regularly host “Artist
in Residence” workshops, and gallery visits and college links are an
important element of GCSE courses at KS4.
The philosophy of the department is to foster students’ confidence and
self-esteem, stretch their imagination, encourage and develop new skills and
celebrate their success. We feel that we have created a stimulating, pleasant
working environment where respectful behaviour, tolerance and creative teamwork
are paramount.
We welcome visits to the department, by appointment with the Head of Art and
Design, from potential students, parents/carers, as well as other interested
parties such as fellow primary/secondary school teachers and trainee teachers……in
fact anyone who loves ART as much as we do!
