At KS3 students’ imaginative work focuses on:-Colour, shape, line, tone, pattern and form in all media, both two and three dimensions. Natural Form and Expressionism provide stimuli in several areas of study. Experimentation with various materials is encouraged and students’ individual and personal responses are valued. Drawing, in various media and from life, is an important basic element at all levels. Ideas are often inspired by the work of both past and present famous artists. Students are naturally encouraged to discuss and appreciate works of art from all cultures. All students are provided with a personal sketch book which they use for planning, personal work and homework. We have used the work of wide ranging artists such as :- Picasso, Rousseau, Klimt, Arcimboldo, Magritte, Henry Moore, Kandinsky, Escher and Anthony Caro, as inspirational starting points for recent projects. We also look at the art and crafts of other world cultures such as:-Asian arts, Celtic arts, Aborigine, Chinese and Japanese arts. The art rooms contain a vast number of books and resources to enable students to appreciate local, national and worldwide arts.
At KS4 Art and Design is a popular choice for Option study and students work in Yrs10/11 towards the AQA [Unendorsed] GCSE examination. This examination allows students to follow a broad, innovative course of study where Sculpture, Fine Art,3D Design, Textiles, Fashion and Graphics may be studied individually, or combined, in preparation for the 10hr. Controlled Test in the final year. Coursework constitutes 60% of the examination and the Controlled Test makes up 40% of the final grade. Examination results in Art and Design are consistently excellent. Many students choose to further their studies at college in preparation for careers within the art or design spectrum.
